I am a non-indigenous person that lives and works on the unceded Coast Salish Territory of the Lekwungen peoples (known today as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations). Acts of colonization (such as the forced removal of Indigenous children from their communities and the trauma of the residential school system) have had lasting negative effects on First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people in multiple forms. Despite these acts of colonization, Indigenous people also continue to have vibrant communities and cultures.
